The Quality of Pet Food

DSC_7503

Today’s message from Mary focused on the quality  of the food we feed our pets  If you can afford it buy a good quality natural product or one from the vet. C was fooled  a few years ago  buying a premium cat food  from the grocery store only to find out the quality of it was gone. Even though it had started out as a good brand to trust it had been bought out by  a large corporation.  And they decreased the quality but still lured C in because of the name recognition  and price.  It cost a fortune so it had to be good quality. C only found out when her kitty got sick and we went searching for another brand of food. A store clerk informed us the terrible food C was feeding her. We felt horrible.  We did find a good brand at the vet’s office (since she is older) which she thoroughly enjoys!

A frequent underlying message that Mary sends is to love yourself.  You can do this in many ways.  The simplest way is to take care of yourself.

In a recent message Mary sent the image of the way we used to farm.  It was a in the days where it was done by hand.  Families would farm small plots of land and grow enough food for themselves and their neighbours to get everyone through the year.  It was hard work and it was challenging, but it was pure, honest, and healthy.

The image then changed to the farming methods of today where huge companies control the process.  The process is far from pure… as chemicals are used in the form of fertilizers and pesticides…the DNA of the seeds have been altered to increase higher crop yields and the seeds are genetically mutated to ward off insects and spoilage.

It’s the world we now live in and it’s a bit scary.   We don’t know what the long term effects are of these genetically modified organisms (GMO’s), and worse yet we have little say in the matter.  As citizens we have never been consulted, yet at the same time we vote in favour of GMO’s every time we visit a grocery store and unknowingly purchase these products.

Mary is reminding us to pay attention to what we eat and take better care of ourselves.  If at all possible do a bit of homework and seek out products that are healthier for us. If we have the means, spent the little bit extra to purchase organic and non-GMO products.  If at all possible communicate to your local government officials and express your concern about food labelling or lack thereof…organize small groups if you think that will help to communicate your concerns…make the healthier choices when you can…if you are lucky enough to own a small parcel of land consider growing your own by creating a small garden…for many of us spring is a few months around the corner, so this is the best time to start thinking and planning!

Whatcha Eatin’

The Four Food Groups

So… next in the series of “Listen” messages Mary drew attention to our health and our eating habits. I couldn’t help but notice that more and more companies are advertising new product lines that say something to the nature of “Now made with natural ingredients”. Which in many ways is a good thing…it means that companies are listening…they are getting the message.

Of course the question I always have is “What the heck were you making before you started using natural ingredients?”. The discouraging thing is that these companies are usually offering the “new” all natural product as part of their product line, which means they are still producing products filled with toxins, hormones and preservatives. If they were truly concerned with our health and wellbeing wouldn’t they discontinue their old product line and only produce the natural products? So there is still a longs ways to go.

Another question to ask is “if a company states that they are making a healthier product is it indeed healthy? Or is it mainly packaging and marketing?” You really need to do your research.

In our neck of the woods a national company was making a claim that they were producing all natural products and that all ingredients on the label could be pronounced. One of the ingredients was Cultured Celery Extract. Sounds healthy enough…but by doing a bit of research you’ll find that Celery is a natural source of nitrites/nitrates… so what initially sounded healthy is actually now a health risk.

I’m sure if you think about it there are plenty of examples of companies trying to wordsmith their product in order to convince you that you are buying a healthy product….only to discover there is still way too much sugar, way too much salt….and way too many unknown ingredients listed on the package (I won’t even bring up GMO’s in this post…that’s a whole other issue).

So continue to do your research, learn more about what you are buying…tell your friends and family when you discover something scary or misleading…keep everyone you love safe!
